GoPro is seeking an experienced and business-oriented Patent Counsel to support our intellectual property strategy worldwide, with an emphasis on patent development and growth of our patent portfolio. This attorney will report directly to GoPro’s Head of Intellectual Property and work closely with hardware and software engineering groups. The position will encompass all aspects of patent law, including invention disclosures, drafting and claiming strategy, coordination of prosecution activities and strategy throughout the world, patent litigation and patent analysis, as well as numerous other IP-related issues. It is a hands-on role, requiring close coordination with multiple teams within GoPro.

What You Will Do

Patent development, patent prosecution, and patent portfolio management.
Actively work with and manage outside patent counsel in filing, prosecuting and maintaining our growing US and foreign patent portfolio.
Support patent litigation strategy, including district court and post-grant actions, and manage outside litigation counsel in successfully resolving patent disputes.
Identify areas of risk and counsel the business to minimize exposure with respect to patent disputes.
Develop and implement policies and procedures relating to IP.

Skills We’re Stoked About

3-5 years experience as a patent attorney, including at least 3 years at a law firm focusing on preparing, filing and prosecuting patent applications. In-house experience a plus.
Experience identifying patentable subject matter and evaluating inventions at an early stage. Demonstrated ability to draft strategic and forward-thinking hardware and software related patent applications for consumer electronics companies.
Experience with litigation, dispute resolution, and conducting infringement/non-infringement and validity/invalidity analysis.
J.D. from an accredited law school with excellent academic credentials. Admitted to California bar (or eligible for RIHC status). Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science. Mechanical Engineering, Physics or other related technical degrees considered with substantial work experience in EE/CE/CS fields and related patent prosecution.
