Software Development Engineer – Relevance Algorithmic Merchandising

The Relevance team at Groupon is at the heart of all that, working on presenting to the Groupon consumer just the right Groupon products at the right time, for a total of more than 100 million interactions daily. This “high purpose” and demanding role offers a unique combination of deep computer science (machine learning, search, statistics), scalable production systems, consumer product thinking and business revenue optimization.

As a member of Algorithmic Merchandising, you will design and develop software systems and algorithms that will enable an enriched Groupon experience by providing the best personalized and merchandised content for each user across mobile, web and email experiences.

Things you’ll be doing:

Work with product owners, other team members and users to refine requirements and designs for new features.

Using services oriented architecture (SOA), architect and build RESTful web services for scale, performance and reliability.

Conceive, code, and launch the next-generation in Groupon's recommendation algorithms; your algorithms will improve the daily experience of the entire Groupon user base.

Redefine the state-of-the-art in recommendation algorithms, personalization and relevance for mobile and online commerce.

Use the richest datasets on user behavior and inventory product performance for local commerce to identify actionable insights.

Put your strong background in algorithms, software development, data mining, a/b experimentation and statistics to practical use.

Use big data technologies such as Elasticsearch, Hive, Cassandra, HBase, Spark, Hadoop, Storm and Teradata.

Implement well-designed, tested, and efficient code.

Continually research, evaluate, learn, utilize and implement new technology.

Contribute to projects with significant company-wide (global) impact and bring them to fruition.

Things we are looking for:

Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science, with an emphasis on algorithms, machine learning, data mining, search, statistics, or similar field. We will also consider strong B.S. candidates with relevant background and experience.

Strong software development skills in Java. We will also consider candidates with strong coding skills in other general purpose computer programming languages that are compiled, class-based, object-oriented, and concurrent and are willing and interested in acquiring skills in Java.

Expert in at least one dynamic scripting language (e.g., Ruby, Python)

Understanding of statistics and probability theory.

Industry experience in recommendation engines, relevance, search and algorithms a plus.

Experience working with distributed systems (ElasticSearch, Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark, Storm, Kafka).

Experience with RDBMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL), distributed NoSQL (HBase, Cassandra), and in-memory databases (Redis).

Experience building high-performance web services and systems – highly performant APIs, horizontal scalability, caching, etc.

Experience working with large distributed storage datasets.

Experience with data collection and mining technologies.

Experience in search relevance a huge plus.

Proficiency with *NIX development environments and shell programming.

Great communication skills.

Ability to work within a team and have a passion for development.
