Senior Software Development Engineer – Developer Tools

Job Description / Skills Required

Requisition ID: R15231
You became an engineer because you believed in technology’s ability to make a difference in the world. So why would you spend your days building things that don’t matter?

At Groupon, we spend our days developing tools that help small businesses thrive in their local communities. We’re a technology company building products that positively impact the lives of the 49.1MM people and Groupon merchants that use them every single day. With thousands of employees across 15 countries, we operate at a global scale but still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking, and celebrates successes.
Of course, local merchants aren’t the only ones who will benefit from your work—you will too. Our team owns an API framework which provides a solid foundation, practices, and tooling around building API oriented mid-tier services in Java. This framework is a building block at Groupon, which means that is part of a standard set of technologies that are recommended for building and improving services.

We aim to make it easy to integrate into Groupons infrastructure and to build, deploy, manage and monitor services. We want to automate as much as possible (project creation, auditing, development, deployment, etc ) so that developers can focus feature development. Services built using this framework are on the fast track for platform improvements at Groupon, and we are currently working on moving from a statically allocated VM based to deployment model to a container based platform.

Our engineering colleagues are our core customers, and our project goals are:
• Increase standardization
• Reduce operational fragmentation
• Reduce developer friction

We are looking for a Senior SDE to help improve our services and tooling. The ideal candidate loves Java and the JVM and knows the Java open source ecosystem well. This person should have extensive experience in library design, API design, and a passion for open source software development. This person should also have great presentation and communication skills to evangelize our tools, and they should enjoy collaborating with skilled peers from across the company. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a strong team, work on exciting technology and change the way Groupon builds software.

Responsibilities:

Write great quality Java code using SOLID principles and fully covered by unit and integration tests

Design and develop tools to reduce developer friction and support continuous delivery in a high scale microservices environment

Ready our framework for onboarding to Groupons container orchestration platform

Work with developer teams to build developer-friendly tools and drive usability and adoption

Collaborate with engineers from across the company to design and review changes from our internal developer community

Maintain our documentation and provide regular training sessions and tech talks

Requirements:

Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience.

8+ years experience in software development, experience building developer-facing tools will be a plus

Excellent programming skills using one of the following: Java, C++, Scala

Knowledge or strong interest of at least one of the following: Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos, PaaS, IaaS

Extensive development and ops experience with service-oriented architectures or microservices

Good knowledge of Jenkins + Maven/ANT/Gradle or equivalent

Deep understanding of Agile and Continuous Delivery concepts and tools
