The Device Experience team sits at the intersection of Toast’s hardware and software and builds cloud based services, and device software that creates a frictionless experience for customers. Starting from the first time a device is provisioned until its end-of-life, the team takes a system-oriented approach crafting solutions that take software, hardware, networking, user experience, people and processes into account to provide the best results for our users.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager for the Device Experience team who will lead a sizable team of talented Engineers in this space. The leader will expand and evolve the team to meet the demanding growth of the business to build scalable products and processes for the future of Toast.  They will lead the team to partner with the Hardware organization on the design and delivery of the next generation of world class products.

About this roll* (Responsibilities) 

  • Lead the team with a focus on the growth and scale of device software at Toast
  • Directly manage a team of engineers and coach them through their career growth journey
  • Plan, prioritize and operationalize the team’s roadmap in collaboration with Product Management
  • Understand the technical domain and stack used by the team, to facilitate and provide guidance on major design decisions
  • Identify talent needs and drive the recruiting process for the team
  • Drive evolution of team processes through entire SDLC including planning, design, implementation, quality, release and support 

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • 5+ years experience building and managing a team of engineers to deliver products to a broad customer base
  • Prior software experience, which includes technical leadership in Android applications, cloud services, and Networking
  • Excellent cross-team communication skills on complex technical topics 
  • Proficient in a modern object-oriented programming language such as Java or Kotlin
  • Experience with Hardware development cycles and best practices
  • Collaborative and solution-oriented partner to business and product leaders

Bonus ingredients* (preferred skills)

  • Experience with PCI Compliance processes
  • Experience with Networking concepts such as Virtual LAN, network segregation, firewall rules or similar
  • Experience with monitoring tools to debug and resolve tough customer issues
