The Employee Cloud R&D team focuses on the restaurant employees who are critical to the success of the restaurant. Through our products, we help restaurants pay, manage, schedule, hire, and retain their team.

As Vice President of Engineering for Employee Cloud, you will drive a group of leaders & teams building the next generation of restaurant technology for the 15M restaurant workers in the US, and more worldwide. This scope includes Toast Payroll & Team Management, Toast Pay Card, the MyToast mobile app, Tips Manager, and Toast Scheduling powered by Sling.

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • Leads a high-performing engineering org distributed across the US, Canada, and Europe.
  • Collaborates closely with Product, UX, Care, Onboarding, Marketing and other cross-functional leaders within the Employee Cloud line of business while representing the Engineering function.
  • Shapes broader mission and strategy in a manner that realizes current and future business needs while energizing teams and providing clarity to broader stakeholder groups.
  • Partners with broader Engineering and R&D leadership to raise the bar on technology at Toast.


Do you have the right ingredients? (Requirements)

  • Accountability exposure to broader business outcomes such as revenue goals, customer experience, product adoption, regulatory compliance or other comparable high level outcomes
  • Experience leading multiple engineering groups and leaders to bring new products to market and scale existing products in a high performance SaaS organization (or comparable) 
  • Experience collaborating with Product and UX leadership and organizations to foster an environment where great products are built.
  • Track record of successful hiring across multiple locations and remotely with a one team mindset
  • A desire and demonstrated ability to grow and develop emerging and more experienced leaders either directly or through others
  • Ability to innovate within a larger organization in support of your group and the wider team

Our Tech Stack

Our products run on a stack that ranges from guest and restaurant-facing Android tablets to backend services in Java to internal, guest-facing and restaurant-facing web apps. Our backend services follow a microservice architecture written using Java and Kotlin on DropWizard; we use AWS extensively, ranging from S3 to RDS to DynamoDB to Lambda. We have our own platform for dealing with service elevations and robust load balancing. We store data in PostgreSQL databases or DynamoDB tables depending on use case, and utilize Apache Spark for large scale data workloads including query and batch processing. The web frontend is built using React and ES6. Our restaurant point of sale application is an Android application written in Java and Kotlin. Apache Pulsar and Camel are used extensively in our integration transaction workflow processing. The Employee Cloud team uses additional technologies through our acquisition of StratEx (2019) and Sling (2022).
