  • Flexible (San Mateo, CA). This role offers the flexibility to work from home, within proximity to our San Mateo office location.

The Role

The Staff Optical Engineer will be responsible for designing and overseeing development of new lenses for GoPro cameras. The Engineer will own specifications for lenses, characterize, design and validate the performance of the lenses, and manage relationships with top-tier optical vendors. The Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring new optical systems to mass production. The ideal candidate will have expertise in lens design and manufacturing, and industry experience in a high-volume lens production environment.

 
What You Will Do

  • Own all aspects of a new lens design, innovation, qualification, release to production, manufacturing bring-up and sustaining support
  • Define and simulate detailed optical requirements based on future product needs
  • Analyze lens prescriptions and provide design guidance to vendors to ensure specifications are met (optical performance, stray light analysis, tolerance analysis, manufacturability)
  • Supervise prototype and production lens testing to validate performance meets GoPro’s specifications
  • Develop and manage internal processes and procedures to streamline design efforts, optimize testing and encourage innovation
  • Manage relationships with lens vendors to ensure performance requirements, schedule and budget are met
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product definition, camera design, quality, operations, vendors and contract manufacturers to ensure product excellence and consistency 
  • Create new solutions and develop new technologies in optics to continually innovate and disrupt consumer digital imaging systems 

 

Skills We’re Excited About

  • B.S. or M.S. in optical engineering or equivalent
  • 8+ years of experience in lens, optical system design and production environment
  • Expertise in Zemax or Code V
  • Industry experience in lens manufacturing
  • Expertise and experience in lens design for digital cameras, automotive, security or mobile
  • Experience in performing optical system design trade studies and simulations
  • Strong knowledge of, and experience in, specifying lens design and performance parameters 

Bonus Points For

  • Stray light analysis (Fred or LightTools) a plus
  • Experience in testing and characterizing lens performance
  • System level imaging system analysis
  • Familiarity with a camera image pipeline and its relationship to lens performance

The pay range for this role is between $151,725 – $205,275. Actual pay within the range is dependent on multiple factors, including your residence location and prior work experience. Equity, benefits, and a discretionary bonus may be additional forms of compensation for this role and are not included in the provided pay range.
