At the beginning of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit, dwarves keep appearing at Bilbo Baggins’ door. Bilbo has no idea why because he’s missing a crucial piece of information — the wizard Gandalf led the dwarves to his house by giving them directions and carving a sign on his door.
While poor Bilbo was in the dark, Gandalf knew the dwarves’ intent, to find a burglar, and how to guide them. He even knew what Bilbo wanted, an adventure, long before Bilbo did.
